Web Quest Introductory Think Sheet

Today we are going to start a research project using various tools and methods to gather information. To accomplish this you will work as a group and individually. Your group will be required to report your results to the other groups. As an individual you will be required to write a newspaper article to summarize the classroom discussion. 

First, as a class we will review a short article about the Civil War. This article review is designed to peak your interest in the subject and to provide you some important background information.  During the Web Quest introduction and article review you should consider the following questions? 

Foundation Questions

  1. Should the monument be constructed?
  2. If yes, what should it look like?
  3. Should public funding be used to construct it?

Overarching Questions

  1. Consider the events; social, political issues that caused the Civil War? 
  2. Consider what is was like to live in Detroit as the events leading up to the Civil War were occurring?
  3. What were the reasons war was declared?
  4. What did the American public think about this war in 1861 and what do they think about it today?
  5. Why do you think African Americans played a role in the Civil War?
  6. What role did Michigan African Americans play in the Civil War?
  7. How did the Civil War affect economics? Both North and South.
  8. How did the people take a stand, or how were they affected by their culture, environment and by their experiences? 

Try to put yourself into the role. Attempt to understand why this person has these beliefs. Carefully read your viewpoint on the monument and the questions for your role. As you conduct your Internet research, look for ways to defend your viewpoint. Be prepared to effectively defend your beliefs with facts and convincing arguments.

Note

There are many site covering the Civil War on the Internet.  Just as you have been taught to view all other sources of information critically, you should remember that many web sites contain biased, if not inaccurate, information. Therefore you should ensure all information contained in your presentation and used as facts during our classroom debate are well researched and viewed critically.
